This unique parcel set within Calgary's Edworthy Park maintains an interesting history as well as a unique position in the city. The Brickburn Estate is one of the few remaining 'old world' parcels of the city fabric, where the growth of Calgary around the immediate area is apparent both in terms of aesthetic, but also by way of a lack of infrastructure. As a conceptual basis for the Brickburn Estate - we tie the new building to the past of the site, while creating a new form that is contextually driven and appropriate. The site of an old brick plant, as well as a sandstone quarry - the immediate area has a rich history that the new building embraces, allowing for a greater integration into the site in both a social as well as environmental context.
Brick, stone, concrete, heavy timber, steel, and glass with an industrially inspired aesthetic typify the formal logic of the new structure, keeping a close tie to industrial proportions and structural rhythms. Large but aggregated forms make up the new home, providing clear formal breaks and spatial progression that allow for privacy from both an internal and external perspective.Conceived of as three contextually driven masonry pavillions that house public functions, and an upper timber and steel volume that houses private functions, the home organizes its program along the natural crest of a hill overlooking the Bow River and city centre beyond. Cradled by natrual escarpemtns and private wood to all sides, the home is free to breathe with a porosity that permits view and solar access .A new home for a growing and changing family that will remain a steadfast landmark to the passage of time.
