The Montgomery Project takes the particular constraints of Calgary's climate as its primary design driver. Harsh winters, intense solar radiation, and a wide thermal range across the calendar year demand a home that is not simply insulated against the outdoors, but intelligently designed in relation to it.
The house is oriented to maximize passive solar gain in the winter months, with deep overhangs calibrated to exclude the high summer sun. Glazing is concentrated on the south face and minimized on the exposed north. The result is a home that significantly reduces its energy demand through design — demonstrating that sustainability and spatial quality are not competing interests, but complementary ones.
